Start Your Day the Popeye Way

April 29, 2011

The modern way to chug your spinach (or kale, or broccoli stems) is to run them through a juicer.  Recently I’ve taken to drinking two big glasses of this green concoction every morning. It’s a zippy, tasty way to get the day started.

Juicing vegetables breaks down their cell walls, which allows your body to quickly absorb the nutrients.  It’s an easy way to increase your green intake, and flood your body with trace minerals and chlorophyll.  Chlorophyll increases oxygen to all parts of your body, which in turns aids in the release of toxins.  Increased oxygen creates a disease-phobic aerobic environment in your body.

That’s what the nutritionists say.  I say it’s just plain delicious.

Green Juice (serves 2)

  • 2 cucumbers (peeled if not organic)
  • 2 large broccoli stems
  • 4 stalks celery
  • 4-5 leaves kale
  • 4-5 leaves romaine lettuce
  • 2 green apples or pears
  • 1 inch ginger root, peeled
  • a handful sweet pea sprouts (optional)

Juice all ingredients in a juicer (not blender).  Speaking of juicers, if you’re in the market I can recommend the Breville Ikon.  A good friend turned me onto it, and it lived up to her appraisal: easy to use, easy to clean.

Does the thought of starting your day this way turn you green, or are you already on the green juice train?

Love this juice combo…can’t start my day any other way! Another good one is orange, carrot, celery. Glad you like the juicer ;-)

I have just recently been given a juicer from a friend who is “upgrading” hers to a super model. I started out making a simple apple and carrot juice but I’m ready now to “go green”….thanks for the recipe…I’ll give it a try.

Now I want to run out & buy a juicer. I have to admit I’ve never made one but will buy Odwalla’s green superfood and I love it. The recipe scares me a bit but hey, if you can drink 2 glasses it must be good?!

Thanks for the follow on twitter. So happy to have found your blog!

Cheers ~ Deb

I have a notoriously unhealthy diet (no junk food, but very few veggies) and I try to make it a point to drink a green superfood drink once a week. I just can’t handle it more than that! The taste is good, the texture…not so much!

Oh, now THIS I have been wanting to try for ages. I definitely need more vegetables (although I do eat quite a bit, just always the same ones). I’m glad you recommended a juicer, too, because I’d have no idea where to start. (The Montel Williams infomercial for juicers almost sucked me in a few weeks ago. haha. :)
