Magazines are rife with pictures of luxurious closets: jewel-box rooms with reams of gilt-edged drawers, and enough crystal dripping from the ceiling to blind a Baccarat salesperson. Everything’s put away and sparkly.
Where’s the utilitarianism? I’d rather (oh yes, we’re talking dream closet here, a fantasy rivaled only by lottery-wining reveries) have spacious hanging racks and bright open shelving than custom cabinetry. That way you can actually see the clothes, and your jewelry doesn’t have to compete visually with mirrored drawer pulls.
So this gem of a tip from Lucky Magazine was right up my bare bones alley:
Line a portion of your closet in corkboard, and use it to hang costume jewelry, fabric swatches, and outfit inspiration pictures.
Utility and inspiration in one budget-friendly package! My magazine tears typically languish in a pile, where I can only hope they’re magically seeping into my sartorial subconscious. How much better to have them posted in my closet, where they could inspire outfits on the spot?
