Here’s a thing that seems to be happening: people are leaving their wood trim stained rather than painted.
The au naturel approach cropped up in recent issues of Lonny and Rue (plus one additional editorial of a CA interior designer or decorator’s chic, laid back, vintage-filled home which for the life of me I cannot locate. He had a covered, tufted mattress as a couch in his living room. It’s driving me beeyonkers that I can’t find it.)
Pairing the trim with a deep color like navy or plum looks fresh. It also helps if the trim has gorgeous details (see above); staining lets the craftsmanship shine.
With all the white, black and brass going on in kitchens these days, a bit of wood trim warms everything up.
What say ye, readers? Is natural wood trim on the upswing?

what a lovely look, I love the unpainted look on trim (and I am a Painter), the fireplace mantles have a distinguished look about them- i say preserve it. If anyone is looking for a clear coat to put on wood, i like to use Benjamin Moore’s Stays Clear in a low-lustre finish- it does not turn yellow- and it is soap and water cleanup-
Great info, thank you so much for sharing!
I love the natural look. We live in a restored craftsman style bungalow whose wide, beautiful wood trim was all painted white when restored – I loathe the previous owners for covering up the authentic, natural look!
I can see where you’re coming from, Amy, especially in a craftsman bungalow.
Yes, love it and wish it was in my house!
