North Shore Weekend Picks

The truth: I’m planning a quiet weekend.  Yoga, movies and cooking lots of fresh produce sounds about right.  Hence the snail’s pace speed of my picks this week.  If you’re looking for more excitement, read on for links to my peers’ selections.  Jane’s list is particularly active this week; Amesbury and Newburyport are hopping!

1. If you and I are the only two people who haven’t seen Inception, we’ll probably cross paths at the Cabot St. Cinema this weekend.  Why brave the fluorescent halls of the cineplex when you can instead be ushered through the front door by a guy in a tux, charmed by a live piano player as you buy your popcorn, and sit in the gilded lap of a vaudevillian 1920′s playhouse for the duration of the film? Inception is playing at 5pm and 8pm Friday and Saturday.

2. Friday is the last night of Cape Ann Restaurant Week (3 courses for $25).

3. Check out the vintage capes at Francie’s Boutique in Rockport. I recently picked up two there (navy and purple tweed), but there are two more stunners on the rack as of yesterday: brilliant red and a cobalt blue with frog closures.

4. Rockport Friends of Library Book Sale: Annual fall book sale is in the public library’s second-floor Brenner Room this Friday through Sunday, Oct. 22 to 24. Hours are Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday from 1 to 5 p.m. Choose from paperbacks of all types, hardback books at bargain prices, children’s books, and treats from the Friends’ special bake sale.

For more and further-flung ideas, check out recommendations from my friends at North Shore Dish, Food & Fiction, Good Morning Gloucester , The Two Palaverers, Lynn Happens and Food for Thought.

P.S.  I finally bought a slow cooker (Torrie’s recommendation on Twitter was spot on, this is the best option if you plan to haul a dish elsewhere).  If it were here already I might make Scrumptious’ Crockpot Chicken Spezzatino – head over for that recipe and a decadent baked camembert.

P.P.S Follow 5thjoy on Twitter and Facebook, won’t you please?

Yay for your purchase (love that you did thorough research too:)! Using my slow cooker tonight- good ol’ brisket.

And I have not seen Inception either… but do want to, very soon.

Wow, that theater looks amazing Abby. I’ll have to find it the next time I pass through New England – love places like that. Thanks!

(and hope you liked the movie. I still haven’t seen it so now I may be the very last person).

Ralph we actually *didn’t* make it to the movie – so you & I are still both in the dark vis a vis Inception. Do check out the Cabot, it’s a rare gem.
