North Shore Weekend Picks

October 7, 2010

Vintage picture of downtown Rockport – but we’ll tell you what’s happening now.

If you live on the North Shore of Boston and are looking for things to do over the weekend, I have good news for you.

A group of local bloggers have banded together to form the North Shore Blogger’s Consortium.  Every Thursday we’ll provide our own individually curated lists of the best local events, along with links to each others’ lists.

Rockport is quiet this weekend (we’re gearing up for next week’s big HarvestFest) but there are still several things to do in the greater North Shore area.

Take a look at my picks below, and scroll down for links to fellow bloggers’ must-dos.

Thursday,  Oct. 7: The last day of the Cape Ann Farmer’s Market.  3-6 PM.  65 Rogers St., Gloucester, MA.

Friday, Oct. 8: Farm Tour & Picnic Lunch at Green Meadows Farm.  Take a one hour guided walking tour of certified organic Green Meadows Farm, followed by a locally-sourced lunch.  11:00 AM.  656 Asbury St., Hamilton, MA.  Order tickets ($36) online.

Saturday, Oct. 9: The Metropolitan Opera’s Simulcast of Wagner’s Das Rheingold: The first of twelve operas broadcast live in HD from The Met.  Director Robert Lepage intends to reinvent Wagner’s Ring, one installment at a time (this is the first of the four operas that make up the Ring).  1:00 PM. Shalin Lu Performance Center, 37 Main St., Rockport, MA.  Order tickets ($26-32) online, at the box office, or by phone: 978-546-7391 (M-F, 10-4)

Sunday, Oct. 10: Pick your own apples at Russell Orchards.  9-5.  143 Argilla Road, Ipswich, MA 978-356-5366

For more local activities, check out Food for Thought, Good Morning Gloucester, Food And Fiction, Lynn Happens, and The Two PalaverersOrchid Grey’s joining in next week with her picks (ditto for North Shore Dish and Greater Newburyport Today), but you should still check her out, because she’s all sorts of spunky and can teach you how to do Heidi braids.

Food For Thought- Heather Atwood

As a painter and writer, Heather Atwood spent a lot of time waiting on tables in great restaurants. While struggling with color and line, she was also learning how to roast a great chicken, and what it means to balance textures in a dish. She’s been interested in good food ever since. Married, the mother of two daughters, Heather now lives in Rockport, Mass. and is the food columnist for the Gloucester Daily Times. She is featured regularly in Taste of the Times videos and her writing can also be seen in the Wednesday food section of the Times.

Good Morning Gloucester brings you the best of Gloucester MA and surrounding communities. From the docks to the restaurants, the sporting fields to the art scene and anything in between, if it’s happening in Gloucester it’s generally covered on GMG.

Jane Ward writes fiction and is the author of Hunger (Forge, 2001) and The Mosaic Artist (to be released).  She is currently at work on her third novel, The Welcome Home.  She also writes about food – in a weekly blog called Food and Fiction, and as a contributing writer to the online regional food magazine, Local In Season – because she loves to cook and eat.  And so does everyone she knows.

Wow! This is so great! Thank you to all of you for putting this together. There are so many cool things I hear about after the fact, but now I might actually get to some of them. My kids thank you, too!
